The 'Test Me' Tithing Verse Isn't What You've Been Told - Malachi 3:10
"Bring the whole tithe... test Me now in this" is the standard proof text for tithing as a binding New Covenant obligation. The question is not whether Malachi means what he says, but to whom it was said, under which covenant, and whether those stipulations transfer unchanged.
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse... test Me now in this," is the single most common verse cited in Charismatic and broader evangelical churches to justify preaching tithing — giving a strict 10% of income — as a binding, New Covenant obligation, complete with a promised financial payoff ("windows of heaven") for compliance and an implied curse for non-compliance. The passage is real Scripture addressed to a real covenant community with a real promise attached to it. The question this study answers is not whetherMalachi 3:10 means what it says, but to whom it was said, under which covenant, and whether that covenant's specific stipulations transfer unchanged onto New Covenant believers giving into a local church that is not the Levitical temple system Malachi has in view.
