Long before Bethlehem, the Hebrew prophets described a coming figure in terms no Israelite could have applied to a merely human king. A child would be born who bears the name Mighty God. A ruler would come out of Bethlehem whose goings forth are from eternity. A king would be addressed as God by God. A son of man would receive the universal worship that Israel reserved for YHWH alone.
These are not vague foreshadowings read back into the text by later Christians. They are specific, and in several cases the Jewish translators of the Septuagint and the pre-Christian rabbinic tradition read them messianically before there was any Christian interest to serve. This post examines seven such passages.
