It is a claim about ownership. Before anything else existed, God did. Everything that exists apart from Him began, and began because He acted. That single sentence settles the two questions every other doctrine depends on: *who God is* — the one who is not made — and *who we are* — those who are. The Bible returns to this claim constantly, and in almost every genre it contains. Narrative tells it ([Genesis 1–2](https://ref.ly/Gen1-2;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Hymns sing it ([Psalm 19](https://ref.ly/Ps19;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com); [33](https://ref.ly/Ps33;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com); [104](https://ref.ly/Ps104;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Wisdom literature meditates on it ([Proverbs 8](https://ref.ly/Prov8;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Prophets wield it against idols ([Isaiah 40–45](https://ref.ly/Isa40-45;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). A gospel prologue reveals who was doing it ([John 1](https://ref.ly/John1;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). An apostle preaches it to pagans ([Acts 17](https://ref.ly/Acts17;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)) and writes it into a hymn about Christ ([Colossians 1](https://ref.ly/Col1;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). And the last book of the Bible ends where the first began, with the whole of heaven worshipping God for having made everything ([Revelation 4:11](https://ref.ly/Rev4.11;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Creation Is the Act of God Alone No created being, force, or material existed before or apart from God's creative act. There was no pre-existing matter for Him to work with, no rival to negotiate with, and no assistant. Isaiah presses this to the point of taunt: God stretched out the heavens *"by Myself,"* spread out the earth *"all alone"* ([Isaiah 44:24](https://ref.ly/Isa44.24;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). This is also where the sharpest objection to Christian doctrine enters, because the New Testament says all things were made *through the Son*. Creation Came by God's Word Genesis 1 does not describe God fashioning, struggling, or assembling. Ten times it says *"And God said."* The universe exists because God spoke, and [Psalm 33:9](https://ref.ly/Ps33.9;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com) states the consequence as bluntly as language allows: *"He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast."* [Hebrews 11:3](https://ref.ly/Heb11.3;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com) draws the conclusion the church has always called *creatio ex nihilo* — creation out of nothing — since *"what is seen was not made out of things which are visible."* The full case, the literary architecture of the six days, and the early church's argument against eternal matter are set out in [the origin of the universe](../the-origin-of-the-universe). ## 3\. Creation Never Stops Preaching The created order is not neutral scenery. [Psalm 19](https://ref.ly/Ps19;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com) says the heavens are *telling* — continuously, in a register beneath language, to every person on earth. Paul says the message is clear enough that no one will be able to plead ignorance ([Romans 1:20](https://ref.ly/Rom1.20;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)), and clear enough that he could open a sermon to Athenian philosophers with it rather than with the resurrection ([Acts 17:24–28](https://ref.ly/Acts17.24-28;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Creation Is Good Seven times in Genesis 1 God evaluates what He has made and calls it ‎**טוֹב** (*ṭôb*, "good"), climaxing in *"very good"* at [Genesis 1:31](https://ref.ly/Gen1.31;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com). This rules out a great deal. Matter is not a mistake, a prison, or a lesser grade of reality. Bodies are not obstacles to spirituality. The physical world is not something to escape. Every system that has taught otherwise — ancient [Gnosticism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism?ref=valuemysoul.com) and its many descendants — collides directly with the refrain of the first chapter of the Bible. ## 5\. Humanity Bears God's Image Human beings are the only part of creation said to be made *"in Our image, according to Our likeness"* ([Genesis 1:26](https://ref.ly/Gen1.26;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)), and the only part given a commission to rule. That image is the ground of human dignity, the reason murder is an offense against God Himself ([Genesis 9:6](https://ref.ly/Gen9.6;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)), and the reason cursing a person is inconsistent with blessing God ([James 3:9](https://ref.ly/Jas3.9;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). Christ Is the Agent, Sustainer, and Goal All things were made *through* Christ, are held together *in* Christ, and exist *for* Christ ([John 1:3](https://ref.ly/John1.3;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com); [Colossians 1:16–17](https://ref.ly/Col1.16-17;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com); [Hebrews 1:3](https://ref.ly/Heb1.3;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). The third of those is the one most often passed over. Scripture never says the universe was made *for* a creature. That creation exists for Christ places Him on the Creator's side of the line, and it means the cosmos has a purpose that is personal rather than abstract. Creation Grounds Worship — and Comfort [Revelation 4:11](https://ref.ly/Rev4.11;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com) gives the reason heaven worships: *"for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created."* The one who made everything owns everything, and is therefore worthy of everything. Nehemiah's Levites make the same confession and add that God *"gives life to all of them"* — present tense ([Nehemiah 9:6](https://ref.ly/Neh9.6;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). That present tense is where the doctrine stops being abstract. A God who merely started the world could be absent now; a God who sustains it is not. It runs three verses into chapter 2, where God finishes, stops, and does something He has not done for anything He has made: He calls a *day* holy ([Genesis 2:3](https://ref.ly/Gen2.3;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)). The first holy thing in Scripture is not a place or a person but a piece of time — and the rest it points to is still on offer ([Hebrews 4:9](https://ref.ly/Heb4.9;nasb95?t=biblia&ref=valuemysoul.com)).
